This article applies to Invoxia GPS Trackers (Classic, Mini, Bike, Pro and Pro Max). If your tracker occasionally shows a location far from where it actually is, this is generally not a malfunction. Here is why, and when to contact us.
🛰️ 1. How the tracker finds its location
Your tracker uses two location methods:
- GPS: the most accurate method, when the tracker has a clear view of the sky.
- Wi-Fi: when GPS has no signal (covered car park, tunnel, inside a building, tracker placed near metal), the tracker detects up to 3 Wi-Fi networks around it and positions itself at the centre of those networks, using a Wi-Fi location database.
📌 2. Why a location can be very inaccurate
The Wi-Fi database is maintained by an external provider and is updated progressively, approximately every 10 to 15 days. If a Wi-Fi network has recently moved (a router taken during a house move, a relocated access point), its position may still be outdated in the database.
The tracker then shows an incorrect point, which can be off by a few hundred metres to several tens or even hundreds of kilometres. The address may even appear in a foreign language if the point lands on the other side of the world.
👉 This isolated point is corrected from the next position onward, when the tracker picks up GPS or other Wi-Fi networks. It does not mean your tracker has been moved.
These discrepancies are more frequent at high speed (motorway, train) and when GPS reception is poor.
🗺️ 3. The point is correct, but the displayed address is wrong
If the point on the map is in the right place but the address shown below it is incorrect, this is a conversion issue between the coordinates and the address (external mapping database), not a tracker fault. Trust the point on the map.
🛣️ 4. A straight line between departure and arrival
On a GPS Tracker Classic, Mini or Bike, the app may draw a straight line on a motorway journey: at high speed, the low-power network does not receive all messages from the tracker. This is normal behaviour, explained in the article The tracker takes time to update its position.
✅ 5. What you can do
- Place the tracker with the logo side facing outward or toward the sky, never in contact with metal (boot, glove box, metal tube), so it picks up GPS more effectively.
- On the GPS Tracker Pro and Pro Max, the blue circle around the point indicates the position uncertainty margin.
📩 6. When to contact us
If incorrect positions recur over several days at the same location, contact us with the tracker serial number and the dates and times of the affected positions: we will analyse the tracker communications.
